Explanation regarding the object of this letter.

Pine stem nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

The pine tree stem nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is the most harmful pathogen posing a threat to coniferous forests.
In the late 1980s, it was included in the lists of quarantine organisms in many countries of the world. From the countries where this pathogen is distributed, the import of untreated wood was banned

Host plants of the nematode are virtually all coniferous species (Pinus, Picea, Abies, Cedrus, Larix, Chamaecyparis, Pseudotsuga). The homeland of this pathogen is North America, from where the organism was brought to Asia at the beginning of the 20th century, where it gradually spread.

Currently, the nematode is registered in the USA, Canada, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Mexico. Its life cycle is closely related to the black barbels of the genus Monochamus, natural inhabitants of coniferous plantations, which carry nematodes from a diseased tree to a healthy one. Penetrating into wood tissues, nematodes cause the death of parenchyma cells, which is accompanied by a violation of the water regime and leads to the rapid death of the tree.

The nematode has not been found on the territory of Russia, however, in the event of introduction and spread, the possible direct and indirect annual damage from this pathogen, according to an expert assessment, can range from 47 to 112 billion rubles.

The source of infection can be branches, Christmas trees, planting material and coniferous wood, including wood waste (sawdust, shavings, etc.), as well as wood packaging material.
